The Arrowhead School Board voted to adopt a new policy (5518) addressing privacy and the use of restrooms and locker rooms by students. Board policy committee chair noted the policy was drafted in consultation with district legal counsel and informed by recent court rulings and federal guidance.
Policy chair reported that attorney Bob Butler provided the committee with a legal overview and that the board had reviewed related legal developments before bringing the policy for a vote. During public comment earlier in the meeting, several speakers urged caution, asked the board to involve educators and medical professionals and recommended sending the matter back to committee for further study; speakers cited federal case law and the uncertain status of executive orders in ongoing litigation.
The board discussed operational questions, including whether visiting coaches from opposing teams would be considered ‘‘staff’’ for purposes of access to locker rooms. The board clarified that coaches are treated as staff for those purposes. After brief discussion, members voted to approve Policy 5518. The motion passed by voice vote.
The board did not publish any changes to the policy text in the meeting minutes beyond the adoption vote; administration and counsel will handle any necessary implementation steps and guidance to staff and families.
Board action: Policy 5518 on privacy and intimate spaces (student restroom and locker room use) was adopted; board members directed administration to continue coordination with staff on implementation.
