The Taos County Commission voted Aug. 19 to place a 1-mill property tax question on the Nov. 4, 2025 ballot for voter approval. The resolution (2025-41) would make the levy effective for calendar year 2026 and run for four years; commissioners said it would sunset at the end of the four-year period and return to voters if they want it continued.
Staff presented conservative revenue projections based on a four-year average and a 3% annual growth rate. "The conservative estimate for the next four years based on a 3% growth rate is approximately $6.7 million," Commissioner Vigil read into the record during discussion of the fiscal impact. The commission heard that the resolution had been reviewed by legal counsel, the Department of Finance and Administration and the clerk’s office; staff said the package was ready for submittal by the clerk by the statutory deadline.
There was a motion to approve the resolution; the motion was seconded and passed on roll-call vote.
Why it matters: if voters approve the measure, the levy would restore a dedicated revenue stream referenced by county staff and supporters as important to sustaining services, including to assist the local hospital.
The ballot question will go to voters on Nov. 4, 2025; the county emphasized the decision is subject to voter approval.
