Design contracts advance recovery projects: Reed Creek Greenway, French Broad riverfront and temporary bridge planning

City staff on Thursday outlined several design and engineering agreements that will be presented to council as part of recovery and bond-funded projects. Among the items, staff said they will present a design contract with Kimberly Horn & Associates for Reed Creek Greenway Phase 1 and a one-year contract with Sasaki Associates for design and engineering on the French Broad riverfront park recovery.
"Item z is actually the 2024 bond project agreement for design with Kimberly Horn and Associates for the Reed Creek Greenway, phase 1," Interim Assistant City Manager Jay Dundas said. Councilmember Maggie Almond later clarified the Sasaki design timeline for the French Broad riverfront project runs from September 2025 through September 2026.
Staff also said they are coordinating with the North Carolina Department of Transportation on temporary bridge reconstruction work where storm damage destroyed a bridge across the Swannanoa River; NCDOT has experience with many temporary bridges and is assisting with assessments and construction planning.
No final contract awards were made during the briefing; staff said the items will appear on the Aug. 26 agenda for council action and that project timelines will be provided at that meeting.
