District staff told the Board of Education that the district is tightening expectations around student devices, distributing a batch of new Chromebooks to ninth graders and implementing a YonderPouch phone-storage system at secondary schools. "We have a batch of new devices coming in that will be distributed to ninth graders," a district staff member said, adding the district wants to "reaffirm the liabilities and the responsibilities that go with possessing a device by a student." The staff member said the district cannot continue replacing lost or broken devices without clearer expectations and better parent partnership.
On phones, the presenter said secondary students will place phones in YonderPouch storage when they enter buildings and the district will use backpacks, cubbies or teacher storage at the elementary level. "We're using a YonderPouch system, and, you know, it's it's now a requirement in New York state," the staff member said. Staff said parents can still contact the school office and students will see texts when they unlock their phones after leaving the building.
Board members asked about Chromebook readiness; staff reported the district has about 300 newly labeled Chromebooks targeted for fifth and ninth grades and that remaining Chromebooks have been inventoried. No formal policy change was voted on during the meeting; staff said they will work with the communications team to notify families ahead of implementation. The staff member also said district communications will reiterate that coaches should not rely on texting students for practice/game cancellations and that official communications will be distributed through ParentSquare and Schoology for families and students, respectively.
