WJCC plans playground upgrade at Laurel Lane Elementary; project in FY26 CIP for $358,000

The division presented a placeholder item to review a planned playground upgrade at Laurel Lane Elementary School that was approved in the fiscal 2026 Capital Improvement Program for $358,000.
Marcellus Snipes (operations) described the project scope as replacing an aging lower playground with a new inclusive/play-accessible structure, a new border with ramp and engineered wood-fiber or poured-surface surfacing (this package will include a poured surface). He said the FY26 CIP includes $358,000 for the project and that a final vendor quotation will be included on the September 16 agenda.
Snipes noted the division is updating playground equipment across sites to improve access and inclusivity, and that $10,739 remained in the FY25 CIP for additional playground upgrades. He said a previous playground purchase a few months earlier cost about $268,000 and that the current project could be more expensive because it includes the poured surface.
Why this matters: The upgrade will replace an aging playground with an accessible design so students of varying abilities can play together; the cost is part of the division’s capital plan.
