The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees on Aug. 28 approved formation of a yearlong community committee to evaluate state‑approved dual‑language program models and recommend a single consistent model for the district.
Misty, the district presenter, told trustees the committee will include community members, Texas Tech representatives, teachers, administrators and board designees. The goal is to review existing models used in the district — including 90/10 and 50/50 models and local variations — and develop a recommendation to present to the board in the spring. The presenter noted Ramirez’s Spanish immersion program is a separate, distinct model and district staff invited that campus to participate in the discussion even though immersion is not the primary focus of this committee.
Trustees voted 7–0 to create the committee; no substantive opposition was recorded. The board directed administrators to convene stakeholders and return a proposed recommendation and implementation plan after the committee’s year of study.
District staff stressed the committee’s purpose is to provide clarity and consistency to attract and retain students to dual‑language offerings and to present one recommended model to the board for approval.
The motion passed unanimously.
