Board approves student personal electronic device policy; wording to be tightened before public posting

The Yorktown Central School District Board of Education on Aug. 25 approved the first reading and adoption of Policy 5695, "Student and Personal Electronic Devices." The board approved the measure after a motion and a second.
Board members noted the policy text needs minor proofreading and tightening before it becomes public. The motion's sponsor said policy committee member Cheryl (absent) will finalize language changes prior to public posting.
The policy follows an internet-enabled device restriction Dr. Hatter described earlier in the meeting. "There is an Internet enabled device restriction that's in place in all of our schools," Dr. Hatter said during his superintendent update, adding that principals had shared details with families and he encouraged parents to contact their child's principal with questions.
Board members voted to approve the policy during the meeting; the record shows unanimous voice votes for the first-reading adoption. The board also conducted first readings of several other policies during the meeting, including policies on food-service charging and free-and-reduced-price meals, which were moved to second reading and adoption.
