Parish President Jewell said the parish broke ground this week on two permanent pumping stations in the Muntz community, calling the work the first permanent pumping infrastructure in that area and part of a roughly $32,000,000 investment in drainage and flood protection.
Jewell said the parish expects the project to more than triple Muntz’s pumping capacity compared with the temporary station currently in use. The parish reported that $10,000,000 of the $32,000,000 investment is being provided by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA).
Site work is underway: Sea Level Construction began sheet piling at Muntz 1 and clearing and grubbing at Muntz 2, and parish officials estimated the project would last approximately 18 months. Jewell noted the pumps will be electric — nine pumps rated at 350 horsepower each — and thanked “Philip” and energy partners for working with the parish to manage the electrical-infrastructure cost to run the equipment.
Jewell said the energy coordination allowed the project to proceed through bidding “without having to make major modifications in the budget.” The remarks did not announce a formal council vote or contractual award in the meeting transcript; parish staff discussions of contractor procurement or final contracts were not detailed in the remarks.
The parish did not provide a completion date beyond the construction-duration estimate, nor did it provide a line-item parish budget beyond the CPRA contribution referenced on the record.
