Resident urges Lake Stevens to reconsider fireworks after advisory vote; council receives public comment

Patricia Johnson, a Lake Stevens resident, asked the City Council on Aug. 26, 2025, to reconsider the city’s decision to allow consumer fireworks following an advisory vote several years earlier. Johnson spoke during the public-comment period and described personal experience and community impacts. Johnson said she moved into the city limits in 2015 and that Fourth of July and New Year’s displays have intensified since she first moved to the area. She told the council most neighbors in her community — which she identified as The Point and characterized as primarily elderly residents — are highly distressed by fireworks. "I feel very strongly about banning fireworks within the city limits of Lake… I’m asking for reconsideration to ban fireworks within the city limits after the advisory vote several years ago was made to continue to allow them," Johnson said. Johnson listed concerns common to community complaints about fireworks: stress to elderly and disabled residents and their pets, escalating intensity of private displays in recent years, property damage and fire risk, and the difficulty of enforcement when devices are obtained off-reservation. She told the council she did not represent every household but said that among more than 100 homes she knows in her neighborhood, the sentiment strongly favors a ban. Council members thanked Johnson for addressing the council and did not take action during the meeting; the matter was recorded as a public comment for council consideration. No formal referral, motion or ordinance concerning fireworks was made or acted on during the Aug. 26 meeting. The council will consider changes to firework regulations only if and when a council member places the matter on a future agenda; citizens can submit written comments or ask to be placed on a future meeting agenda for formal consideration.
