Council awards community-center patio contract and keeps Jade Street Park projects on schedule

The council on Aug. 28 authorized the city manager to execute a construction contract with SSB Contracting Inc. for the Community Center patio improvements project in the amount of $1,055,000 and to issue notices to proceed upon final contract execution. The patio is part of a broader suite of projects at Jade Street Park—the Treasure Cove playground and restroom renovation—that are funded by a mix of state grants, community fundraising and city funds.

Staff reported the patio work complements ongoing renovation at the community center, adding hardscape, lighting, irrigation, and ADA access. The playground bids were opened earlier in August and staff said they would return with a recommendation to award that contract at the next meeting; restroom plans have cleared building permitting and are expected to go to bid in October. Staff expects core construction to continue into summer 2026.

Council requested regular updates on change orders and contingency use for the suite of projects; staff noted earlier asbestos removal and other normal renovation contingencies and promised a quarterly report in September that will include construction-management staff and change‑order details.

Councilmembers expressed support for completing the complex and for transparency on total project costs, and they thanked public-works staff and project partners for progress to date.
