Dean Grewe Elementary reports strong kindergarten turnout and reading gains after ARC implementation

Dean Grewe Elementary Principal Jesse Wilson told the board the school welcomed 118 kindergarten students and 36 transitional-kindergarten (TK) students and has spent the opening weeks focusing on routines, safety drills and early assessment.
Wilson said teachers and staff are emphasizing arrival, lunch, recess and classroom routines. The school planned a secure-and-teach drill followed by an evacuation drill to teach students building safety steps.
Wilson also provided progress data for the school’s work on ARC (a reading intervention/response program). She said the school’s first year of ARC implementation in 2022 showed 17 percent of students were at grade-level proficiency at the beginning of the year; by the end of last year, 52 percent of students were proficient or above. The school will continue ARC implementation and focus on math alignment and quick-check assessments so staff can intervene early where students need support.
Ending — The principal said the school will begin its first PLC (professional learning community) sessions next week to review curriculum and assessment data and continue early interventions; no specific new budget or staffing requests were made during the report.
