District, Boys & Girls Club, transit agency coordinate to ease after-school transport as program grows

Superintendent Jennifer said the Boys & Girls Club has grown to the point where the district is “struggling with transportation.” The district met with the club and Benton-Franklin Transit; the transit agency agreed to adjust a route to pick up middle-school students (about 85 students) at the middle school and drop them at the Boys & Girls Club as part of its route schedule, a change meant to relieve timing conflicts and make the club accessible for after-school participants.
The superintendent detailed other partnership work: installation of a secure black chain-link fence on the playfield, planting trees on the south side of the club through a utility tree program, and plans to remodel three classrooms at the district site under a Department of Commerce grant to expand ECAP (early childhood) space. District staff, ESD partners and the Boys & Girls Club walked the project site with architects and owners and expect drawings soon.
The superintendent also said the club’s rising enrollment is creating scheduling challenges for bus routes and field trips. The district is recruiting bus drivers and offering to pay for training; once five drivers are trained, the district expects two substitute drivers for trips. The district did not give exact timelines for the classroom remodel beyond saying drawings and grant-funded work are forthcoming.
