The funding “will help us to meet the needs of some of our most needy students,” Dr. Alice, Special Services Director, told the Board. The district recorded $235,430 as state funding and $11,058 as federal funding from the award.
The director also described outreach and training efforts for the start of the school year. The district recertified 16 paraeducators and teachers in the MANDT system, a district-adopted, trauma-informed, relationship-based program intended to prevent, de-escalate and safely respond to behavioral escalations, Dr. Alice said. She said she visited all special services classrooms on the first day of school, launched a special-services newsletter, and is holding weekly Tuesday drop-in office hours for staff technical support.
Board members praised the work. One director said the safety-net award represented “more money than we’ve gotten than I can ever recall,” and thanked Jennifer, the superintendent, and staff for supporting the submission.
The director invited questions and said additional training sessions are planned for the year.
