Town planning director highlights youth-focused elements in Buena Vista comprehensive plan

Marika Kopp, the town planning director, updated the trustees and school board Aug. 12 on the town’s comprehensive plan process and emphasized the role of youth engagement and school partnerships in shaping land‑use recommendations. Kopp said the town received a $100,000 grant in 2023 to develop the comprehensive plan and that the school and youth were woven into multiple chapters; she described public outreach at farmers markets, youth events and the rodeo and said a student sat on the steering committee to help guide goals. Key plan objectives Kopp highlighted include supportive housing and development tools for educators and public‑services workers, expansion of early‑childhood and licensed child‑care facilities, and identifying space and programming needs for teens. She said the plan aims to help residents "be able to live where they work" and to preserve community character while accommodating growth over the next 10 years. Kopp said the planning team has issued several plan drafts for feedback and has prioritized boots‑on‑the‑ground engagement in recent months; she asked trustees and board members to continue holding the planning team accountable for action after adoption, noting the plan should not "just sit on the shelf." The comprehensive plan remains in the public review and adoption track; no formal adoption vote was taken at the work session, and Kopp encouraged continued coordination between town staff and the school district as the plan moves toward adoption and implementation.
