North Ridgeville students present Peru service-learning trip, show vlog and describe service work

Nine North Ridgeville students presented highlights from a summer service-learning trip to Peru at the Sept. 2 board meeting, showed a short vlog and described service work, cultural experiences and personal impacts.
During the superintendent's report the district introduced trip leader Mister Brandon Muck, who said the group made a two-minute vlog and that a longer 20-minute version is available for those who want more detail. Muck told the board he took nine students on the trip.
Students said the service component included building steps in the Andes Mountains and working in local kitchens. Student Davian said, "My favorite part about the trip was building the stairwell. I didn't build the stairs. I was wheelbarrowing bridal up the mountain, and that was my favorite part because me and Kayla made it like a competition." Student Caitlin said, "My favorite part of the trip was definitely the service that we did," and described washing dishes and connecting despite language differences. Students also described visiting Machu Picchu and hot springs.
The presenters said the vlog is on YouTube under a district search term; trip leader Muck offered to email a link to board members if they could not find it. Students noted local cultural foods they tried, including guinea pig and alpaca.
Muck told the board he will bring paperwork for proposed future service trips — listed in the presentation as Costa Rica next summer and Thailand the following summer — so the board can review approvals and travel documentation.
The presentation included student reflections that the trip increased gratitude and cross-cultural understanding; students told the board they would be interested in future service trips.
