County authorizes pilot special archery hunt; 10 slots, lottery selection for residents

Wright County authorized its Parks and Recreation Department on Aug. 19 to coordinate a special archery hunt in 2025, limited to 10 participants and scheduled for the last two weeks in October. Ross, parks staff, said the program would be open to county residents aged 18 and older for the first year and that the county plans to assign hunters to managed areas in Montesippe, Bertram and Harry Larson parks to simplify management.
Ross said the area under consideration lies within a chronic wasting disease surveillance zone (Unit 229), and county staff will include hunter safety and educational components for selected participants. Staff also confirmed that crossbows would be allowed per Minnesota DNR regulations and the plan would follow state rules. The county will accept lottery applications online through its registration software; an advertising campaign and participant outreach will follow board authorization.
Commissioners asked whether the event was limited to veterans; Ross said it will be open to all Wright County residents age 18 and over in the pilot year, with reassessment after the first year to consider possible broadening. The board voted unanimously to authorize Parks to proceed with the special archery hunt.
