Board ratifies three-year jail accreditation agreement

The Graham County Board of Supervisors ratified acceptance of a three-year national jail accreditation agreement at its Sept. 2 meeting. The sheriff’s department requested the board’s approval after staff completed the application and review.
Jeff McCormies of the sheriff’s department described the accreditation as a recognition of the jail’s policies and practices and credited jail administration and correctional officers with the effort. “This is just a request to, approve our national accreditation reference to jail… asking for the board's approval of the acceptance of the, terms and conditions for the 3 years,” McCormies said.
A supervisor who reviewed the packet characterized the accreditation as optional but beneficial for standardized training and awareness, noting that the program “raises the bar for us.” That speaker said the cost was “$7,500 for 3 years” and called the price reasonable for the training and program administration.
The board moved to ratify the agreement and approved it by voice vote: three ayes. The county will proceed with the accreditation program under the terms presented to the board.
Discussion: Board comments focused on training value, staff work to implement the program, and officer awareness in custodial settings. No public comment opposed the measure.
