District sets timeline to appoint members to 2025 school building committee; finance subcommittee to review applicants

Hingham School Committee leaders on Aug. 18 outlined a timeline for appointing three school‑committee‑recommended members to the 2025 School Building Committee and said the finance subcommittee will review public applications. A district staff member explained the composition of the building committee per town practice: the School Committee recommends three members (typically including one current school committee member), the town moderator appoints two, and the select board appoints two; committees generally include an educator, a facilities person and a finance representative. The district will open public recruitment via the town talent bank; applications will remain open through Sept. 19, after which the School Committee’s finance subcommittee will review candidates and may conduct interviews. The subcommittee aims to inform the public of selections by Oct. 27 so that the building committee is in place as MSBA decisions move forward. Committee members agreed the finance subcommittee will perform candidate reviews and will report recommendations to the full committee; interested School Committee members were asked to inform the chair if they wished to serve on the building committee. Staff noted the time commitment can extend several years and that meeting frequency will depend on project pace.
