The San Fernando City Council presented certificates to volunteers from Ignite the Light for their work addressing food insecurity and community outreach, and it honored Javier Perez, assistant commander of cadets for the California Cadet Corps 200th and Fifth Battalion at Pacoima Middle School, for youth mentorship.
Vice mayor Mary Solorio and other council members praised Ignite the Light volunteers for outreach and partnership in the fight against food insecurity. A representative from Ignite the Light said, "We are truly honored to be recognized by the city of San Fernando and deeply grateful for your continued partnership," and thanked volunteers and community partners.
Mayor Mendoza presented a certificate to Javier Perez for his leadership of cadets who serve as color guard at Memorial Day and Veterans Day events and participate in community activities. Commander Javier Perez told the council, "What we do is try to build leaders. We try to teach them how to lead others and lead in their own lives," and described empowerment and teamwork as program goals.
Why it matters: Council members emphasized the role of volunteer groups and youth leadership programs in community support, public events and civic engagement. The recognition was ceremonial; no policy or funding decisions were taken.
