Rockland superintendent announces retirement; committee appoints Jane Hackett as successor

Kron read a letter addressed to faculty, staff, the community and the school committee saying he will retire at the end of the 2025–26 school year and expressing gratitude for his time leading Rockland Public Schools. He wrote, “Serving as the superintendent of the Rockland Public Schools has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
The committee moved and seconded a motion to appoint Hackett as superintendent pending contract talks; the committee then voted in favor. The motion specifies the appointment is effective July 1, 2026, and that contract negotiations will be handled by Chair Joe Maroney. The transcript records that the motion passed after members were offered time for discussion and then voted “all those in favor.”
Kron recommended Hackett in his remarks, saying she has “earned the trust of every teacher, staff member, and family” she has worked with and calling her “uniquely suited to be Rockland's next superintendent of schools.” Hackett responded briefly during the meeting, saying, “Yes, that’s me.”
Committee members who spoke during the discussion highlighted continuity and stability as reasons for promoting the assistant superintendent. They noted Hackett’s operational knowledge of the district and said promoting from within should minimize disruption during the transition. Speakers also praised Kron’s leadership and thanked him for his service; Kron said he is moving to Indiana and is getting married, and he repeated his appreciation for the district.
Next steps are contract negotiations between the chair and Hackett’s representatives; the appointment will take effect only after those negotiations are completed as specified in the motion.
