The San Fernando City Council voted Monday to authorize city staff to contact the Los Angeles Unified School District and request a waiver of a $4,500 facility-use fee assessed to the San Fernando Wrestling Youth Crossroads program.
Why this matters: The volunteer-run program supports local students by providing wrestling gear, paying for tournament participation and meals; the $4,500 fee had created a funding strain that threatened program continuity, organizers said.
Councilmember Victoria Garcia introduced the item, saying the program has operated out of San Fernando High School for decades and that the coach and volunteers provide mentorship as well as logistical support for weekend tournaments. Garcia said she believed LAUSD or the appropriate board member may be able to waive the fee and asked the council to authorize either a formal letter or informal inquiry to seek relief.
The council moved and seconded a recommendation to request the fee waiver and directed staff to pursue the most appropriate outreach to LAUSD. The roll call vote was unanimous among members present. "This would benefit dozens of local children and allow them to take part in an athletic and mentorship program," Garcia said.
Next steps: Staff will prepare a formal request to LAUSD and pursue any available fee-waiver process to reduce the financial burden on the volunteer program, and will report back to the council on responses and outcomes.
