Agreement reached on Hamilton Road bridge; VDOT to replace closed crossing after years of impasse

Supervisor Jones (committee representative) said the bridge has been closed for about nine years and that residents have been forced to drive long detours; the closure also limited emergency responders’ access. She told the board that the parties had reached resolution in recent discussions and that the bridge replacement will proceed. The county said it will work with the Louisa Historical Society to document the bridge’s history and to preserve information about the historic crossing as the replacement proceeds.
The board did not take a vote on funding at the Sept. 2 meeting; the announcement reflected an operational resolution between VDOT and the historic-organization stakeholder that clears a path for replacement planning and procurement under VDOT’s processes. Supervisors said residents on Hamilton Road welcomed the news.
Staff said further procedural and funding steps would follow VDOT’s standard replacement process and that the county will coordinate any required local activities or commemorations.
