Committee forwards variance for 192‑sq‑ft wooden shed at public works garage despite P&Z split

The Planning and Economic Development Committee voted Sept. 2 to forward Ordinance 31‑25, a variance request from industrial design building-material standards, to the Sept. 15 board meeting with a positive recommendation. The variance would permit a 192-square-foot wooden shed at the village public works garage on Gregory Road; industrial design standards require masonry materials.
Staff recommended approval, saying the shed would be placed behind the building, not visible to the public, and would serve operational needs. The Planning and Zoning Commission, however, voted 2–4 to not recommend approval, stating the village should uphold the same standards it expects of other property owners.
Public works staff member Mitch addressed the committee, saying the shed was large enough to store barricades and temporary mailboxes used during snow season and that it would keep those items out of the shop. Committee members asked whether the size was sufficient; Mitch said it would be.
Despite the P&Z split, the committee forwarded the ordinance to the Sept. 15 board meeting with a positive recommendation; the board will consider the variance for final action.
