Board hears update on awning, Duval project, chiller architect selection and pre-bids for paving

Superintendent Frank Barnett told the Lincoln County Board of Education on Aug. 5 that several facilities projects intended to be finished before the start of the school year are underway, including replacement of a storm-damaged awning at the central office and ongoing work on the Duval project.
"No. It'll be a covered walkway with trusses and and metal roof," Barnett said of the planned awning replacement, describing work that could start within days and including removal of block pillars and new lighting under the walkway.
Barnett said Duval project work "is moving along very well" and encouraged board members to visit the site. He also reported there was a pre-bid meeting scheduled that week for district paving projects and another pre-bid for a Safe Schools entrance project. The board expects to interview and select an architect on Aug. 15 for a chiller project at Lincoln County High School that will be funded through the School Building Authority, Barnett said.
Other operational updates from the superintendent included extended hours for paint and wax crews to complete exterior painting, ongoing HVAC repairs at multiple schools and general cleanup before the school year. A separate consent agenda item discussed the removal and replacement of two fuel tanks and concrete pads at an unspecified site; district staff said work would start within "the next couple of weeks" if the board approved the consent agenda.
Board members voted 4-0 to approve the consent agenda earlier in the meeting, which the superintendent said was a prerequisite for moving forward with the tank removal and related site work.
Why it matters: facilities readiness affects school openings, student safety and operations. The board heard timelines that place several projects — awning replacement, paving, Safe Schools entrance and a planned chiller upgrade — in pre-bid or interview phases ahead of classes starting in mid-August.
