Parks staff report busy summer: camps, events, dock repair and LED field lights

City parks staff told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board the summer season included multiple events, infrastructure repairs and lighting upgrades, and noted ongoing turf drainage problems that will need seasonal fixes.
Parks and Recreation staff on Aug. 11 summarized summer operations, saying the department ran camps and community events, completed several maintenance projects and finished LED lighting retrofits on selected ballfields.
"We hosted the Oldsmar Days and Nights event and the parade," Chip, Parks and Recreation staff, told the board, adding that the Honor Our Heroes 5K "had the most runners ever in that event. Right. I think it was over 600." He listed other summer activity: a Memorial Day ceremony, monthly baseball tournaments at the Oldsmar Sports Complex and Saturday farmers markets.
Staff reported completed maintenance work that included new doors for the soccer/football concession stand and restroom, replacement of the floating dock railing at Sheffield Park, planting at Ari Olds Park and Veterans Memorial Park, and replenished engineered mulch at several playgrounds. Chip said staff completed biannual certified playground safety inspections and completed LED lighting retrofits on Fields 1, 2 and 7 at the sports complex; remaining fields are scheduled for the next fiscal year.
Summer program metrics and special events included a 10-week summer camp with about 75 participants, a party-in-the-park at Sheffield Park with about 400 attendees and an "extravaganza" the department estimated drew roughly 1,500 people. Staff also reported strong participation in specialty camps (theater, fishing, kayaking and comic-book camps).
Staff described ongoing turf challenges at some multi-use fields, particularly a persistently wet northeast corner on Field 2. "That northeast corner of that field just doesn't dry," Chip said, describing drainage as a recurring maintenance problem. Staff said they plan to overseed with rye in November to maintain field health through the winter and to continue weed-control efforts and routine mowing.
Board members praised staff work on events and maintenance and thanked staff for successful summer programming. No formal board action was taken; the item was an operational update.
