Council approves conditional-use permit for Safeway Transportation at 6925 S. 6th Street with conditions on outdoor storage

The Oak Creek Common Council on Aug. 19 adopted a resolution approving a conditional-use permit (CUP) for Safeway Transportation Services Corporation to operate a contractor office, maintenance shop and contractor yard at an existing multi-tenant building at 6925 South Sixth Street, Suite 100. Staff said the business had been operating at the site before obtaining the CUP and the application brings the operation into compliance with city rules.
Conditions and limits: Community Development Director Christie Lane explained the site plan and the CUP conditions. The business will provide transportation buses (including for Milwaukee Public Schools), operate a maintenance garage and maintain offices on site. The CUP limits outdoor storage to a maximum of 21 buses and six passenger vans; staff also required that the parking and outdoor storage be shown and maintained as identified on the approved site plan. The authorized hours of operation for the business are 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Staff and Planning Commission: Lane noted the site is zoned M-1 (manufacturing) and that the code requires 39 parking spaces; the applicant’s plan showed 41 spaces for employees and visitors, with separate outdoor storage areas shown for buses and vans. The Planning Commission reviewed the application at its June 24 meeting and recommended approval with the conditions described in staff’s report.
Council action: Following the public hearing (with no members of the public speaking on the item), a council member moved to approve the CUP amendment for 6925 South Sixth Street; the council adopted the resolution by roll-call vote. Several aldermen praised the cleanup and improvement of parking and commended the applicant for bringing the operation into compliance.
What the CUP does not do: The CUP authorizes the contractor yard, defined parking and outdoor storage and the specified hours; it does not change zoning on the site or alter any other code requirements. Staff will expect code compliance and site maintenance consistent with the approved site plan.
