Council schedules bandshell open house for Aug. 25 as insurance dispute over rebuild amount continues

The International Falls City Council on Aug. 4 set an open house for Monday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. to solicit public input on the future of the Cary Park bandshell and related uses of insurance proceeds.
Councilors said the tally and purpose of insurance proceeds remain under discussion with the insurer and that some demolition and partial reimbursement have already occurred. City Administrator Betty Rudd told the council the city has been reimbursed “in part” for demolition expenses but that ongoing negotiations remain focused on what types of reconstruction the insurance will cover and how much money the insurer will make available.
Options to be presented at the open house include rebuilding a traditional bandshell, constructing a multiuse pavilion, retaining open green space, or using any available funds for other municipal needs such as ambulance cost reduction if the insurer allows that use. Councilor Kaler and Councilor Wagner, members of the bandshell committee, said the packet includes conceptual pictures and a public survey; the council asked the committee to include written comment options for residents who cannot attend.
The council approved the Aug. 25 open house unanimously and directed staff to publicize designs and the survey online and at city hall. Councilors said the city needs clearer information from the insurer on allowable uses of proceeds before final design decisions are made.
