Caroline County Public Schools’ board voted Aug. 18 to waive first reading and add several course name changes and new offerings to the high-school program of studies for 2025–26.
Administrators proposed renaming existing courses to match Virginia Department of Education coding, offering AP 2‑D Art and Design, AP 3‑D Art and Design and AP Drawing to replace a generic AP Studio Art listing, and adding two new courses: Jobs for Virginia Grads (a job‑readiness program for students facing barriers) and a second semester dual‑enrollment humanities course (DE Humanities 202) to pair with an existing DE Humanities 201 sequence.
Rachel Wheeler and program staff told the board that AP art courses will require syllabus submission to the College Board, and that the Jobs for Virginia Grads course was funded by a grant awarded in June that covers teacher time and program expenses. “This is a late add as we were just awarded the grant in June to offer the course,” a presenter said.
Board members asked whether approvals required any additional permissions from the College Board or the state; staff said the AP instructor must submit the syllabus to College Board and that the SCED code for the renamed Education for Employment course remains unchanged.
A motion to waive the first read and approve the courses carried unanimously on the board roll call.
