Mountlake Terrace library staff outline programs, read-along and sensory resources for families

Kristen, manager of the Mountlake Terrace branch of Sno-Isle Libraries, briefed the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission on library programming that could support city outreach.

Kristen said the library is participating in the districtwide Snow Isle Reads Together program, an annual read-aloud initiative that includes online and in-person events. “It’s once a year,” she said when asked how often the book selection rotates. The library provided copies and stickers to promote the program.

Kristen also described recent and ongoing offerings: Korean-language classes, story times in Russian, and access to sensory resources that parents can test — noise-reduction headphones, weighted vests and communication cards. She noted the library’s meeting rooms and event spaces are available for community programs but warned that larger or louder programs sometimes require doors to be closed or lobby doors propped to balance acoustics.

Commissioners discussed partnering with the library on a Mountlake Terrace “community conversation” and several incoming city events. Kristen said staff can host performers, help with room setup and provide online event options; she encouraged commissioners to reach out with dates so the library can confirm staffing and technical needs.

No formal funding or contract was requested. The library offered to supply flyers and to be a venue partner for upcoming DEI and city activities.
