The International Falls City Council on Sept. 2 authorized an informal committee to work with recreation-hockey stakeholders on the future maintenance and planning for Cary Park Arena and heard public comment urging the city to transfer ownership to the recreation association.
Councilors discussed a prior meeting with recreation-hockey members and said the ad-hoc committee would meet in a smaller setting to review the arena’s deficiencies and develop plans and ideas for maintenance and improvement. Councilor Kaler said Councilors Kaler and Wagner agreed to serve on the committee. Councilor Holden moved to approve creating the informal committee; Councilor Buller seconded. The council approved the motion unanimously, 5-0.
During the audience open forum after the agenda items, resident Bobby Bernath said, "I think that the city should maybe try to sell Cary Park to the rec, and then they can take care of the maintenance and things like that." Bernath said rec could fundraise if they lacked money. The council did not take a formal vote on transferring ownership; the motion approved an informal committee to work with stakeholders on planning and maintenance ideas.
Councilors emphasized the need for serious plans for maintenance; no timetable, funding source, or formal transfer mechanism was proposed during the meeting.
