Tooele County on Sept. 2 approved renewal of an automatic aid agreement with South Valley fire agencies, extending the term in the existing contract structure and increasing a per-call reimbursement rate slightly to reflect inflation and to assist partner agencies with recruitment and retention.
Bucky Whitehouse, Emergency Services Director, told the council the original agreement had been negotiated for a two-year cycle with options to renew; the renewal establishes two additional three-year cycles. The agencies requested a modest increase in the per-call run reimbursement, which Bucky said was adjusted from $1.50 to $1.54 (the transcript references an inflation-based adjustment tied to CPI). He said partner agencies are experimenting with models that reimburse members for responding to calls as a recruitment and retention aid; the county’s reimbursement supports that effort.
Whitehouse said the renewal clarifies operational reporting requirements and software-system interactions with the county for consistent reporting and coordination. The contract covers Vernon, Rush Valley and Stockton among the automatic aid partners. Council members voted unanimously to renew the agreement.
Why it matters: Automatic aid agreements fund emergency response in unincorporated areas and help maintain volunteer staffing levels in rural fire agencies. The small per-call increase is intended to offset inflation and assist partner agencies with member reimbursement programs.
