Board approves $1.15 million in library impact fee grants to county and municipal libraries

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners approved $1,147,779 in library impact fee grants on Aug. 12 to fund systemwide digital subscriptions, read‑along book collections and municipal library capital and collection needs. George Taylor, director of the Office of Library Services, presented six applications from the county library system and municipalities. The recommended awards included $764,500 for a three‑year purchase of digital databases that address education, legal, financial and technical needs; $49,279 for a systemwide read‑along book collection for early literacy; and smaller awards to Fruitland Park, Howey‑in‑the‑Hills, Tavares and Umatilla for architectural design, collection expansion and patron‑driven acquisitions. Commissioner Morris, the library advisory committee liaison, moved approval and Commissioner Parks seconded. The board voted unanimously, 5–0, to accept the committee’s recommendations and authorize interlocal agreements with municipalities. Library staff noted the read‑along items have high turnover — last fiscal year the system checked out existing titles more than 10,000 times — and that digital databases will expand test‑prep, legal forms and automotive repair manuals across all branches.
