The North Miami Commission for Women voted on Aug. 20 to purchase a table for $1,500 at MJD Wellness’ 10th‑anniversary gala in October, with commission members agreeing the nonprofit’s ongoing partnership warrants support.
Chairwoman Naomi Esther Blameer put the request to the commission and a motion to purchase a 10‑seat table at $1,500 was seconded and carried. One commissioner disclosed a conflict of interest and recused from the vote.
Commissioners noted that MJD Wellness has previously partnered with the commission on programming, including prior wellness conferences and in‑kind support for commission events. The commission did not appropriate city budget to cover the table; members discussed purchasing tickets individually and promoting the gala to the public to raise funds for the nonprofit’s food‑bank and mobile clinic services.
"We would love to have you. And we will also…collect money to not close those two services," said the MJD Wellness representative during the meeting request for support. Commissioners asked staff to record the vote and to confirm logistics for attendance and payment.
The commission agreed to advertise its involvement on social media and to consider promotion of the health and wellness conference and festival connected to the gala dates. Commissioners who could not purchase tickets immediately said they would promote the event and seek other individual purchases to fill the table.
The vote passed with a majority of commissioners present; the commissioner who recused did so citing an affiliation with the nonprofit.
