The Grayson County Board of Supervisors voted at its August meeting to direct the Grayson County Planning Commission to consider amendments to section 5‑11 of the county zoning ordinance (1998, as amended), which governs special‑use permits.
A staff member told the board the proposed changes are intended "to clarify the process for applying, reviewing, and approving these permits to ensure consistent standards" and to provide guidance on impacts including traffic, public infrastructure and the environment. The resolution also authorizes the planning commission to consider limited setback modifications when appropriate.
The resolution cites the board's authority under Article 7, Chapter 22, Title 15.2 of the Code of Virginia and directs the planning commission to hold a public hearing on the draft ordinance attached as Exhibit A and to report its recommendation, including any amendments, no later than 100 days after its next regular meeting.
During the meeting Jerry Carter, who identified himself as an owner at Deer Creek RV Resort, said he had worked with county staff on zoning issues for that property and thanked staff for assistance; he described the situation as a longstanding compliance matter he and other property owners are trying to resolve.
Supervisors recorded aye votes during the roll call. The board also agreed informally to recommend that an individual identified as Hyde be appointed to the planning commission; supervisors signaled their support by voice vote.
Next steps: the planning commission will schedule a public hearing, consider the draft revisions and report back within the 100‑day timeframe specified by the board. The board’s resolution cites Code of Virginia sections governing special exceptions and special‑use permits.
