Commission adopts pension amendments for police and firefighters after multiple workshops

The City Commission voted to adopt two ordinances amending city pension code provisions for municipal police and fire pension plans during the Sept. 8 meeting.
Staff described the ordinances as changes to negotiated benefits reached through collective bargaining and the budget process. Planning and Finance staff reminded the commission that the measures had been the subject of multiple workshops and had appeared previously as a first reading.
The ordinances amend sections of the City Code dealing with benefit amounts and eligibility and the deferred retirement option plan (for one ordinance) and multiple sections of the municipal firefighters pension article for the other, including definitions and participant contribution accounts. Commissioners recorded their support in roll call votes; public comment on those ordinances was not extensive. The ordinances were approved and will be codified into the city code in forthcoming administrative steps.
