Board reviews AP and SAT results and approves continuous improvement plan update

District staff presented spring Advanced Placement (AP) and SAT results, reviewed the district’s five‑year strategic plan, and the Board of Trustees approved the district’s continuous improvement plan for the 2025–26 year.
Administrators reported increases in AP participation and in the number of students scoring a 3 or higher on AP exams; staff said 76 students in the district took AP exams last spring and highlighted a Middleton High School student who earned two scores of 5 and was recognized by the College Board. Staff described AP growth as notable because raising participation typically lowers pass rates, yet the district increased both participation and the number of 3+ scores.
On the SAT, staff said the district administers the state‑required SAT to all juniors and presented benchmark outcomes: 27% of students met both reading/writing and math benchmarks, and 38% met at least one benchmark. Reading and writing met the benchmark at 65% while math met it at 28%, slightly below state and national averages in math according to staff.
Staff also reviewed the district strategic plan and the continuous improvement plan. Trustees were told the district is entering year five of the strategic plan and will begin a renewal process in January that will involve two board members, administrators, teachers, parent volunteers and students in drafting new goals. The district reported it is again exempt from updating narrative portions for state reporting and will submit metrics data; staff described the state report card changes that reframe achievement, growth and success indicators.
The board discussed targets. Staff explained the district’s consistent approach of a 3% annual increase target in proficiency, and outlined actions to meet targets including RTI interventions, targeted school‑level data use, curriculum adoptions (notably ELA/reading), and purchased intervention materials. Staff said some targets may move up or down because state targets are cohort‑based and compare different student cohorts year to year.
The trustees moved and approved the continuous improvement plan for 2025–26. The motion passed by voice vote as recorded in the meeting transcript. Staff said they will reconvene the strategic planning committee this winter and present a refreshed strategic plan in late spring/early fall next year.
