Resident presses for posted forecasts; finance director pledges clearer grant tracking and midyear review

A resident who identified herself as Anna used the citizens forum at the Aug. 14 Yadenborough Council meeting to urge timely posting of council agendas and more transparent financial information, including a year-end forecast showing where the borough stands against its budget.

Anna said posted agendas were not available 24 hours in advance, requested that the borough post the year-end forecast on its website and asked for updated information about police accreditation. "If we could put that on the website so that the residents could see where we're falling, just to make sure that we're going to stay within budget, that would be great," she said.

Finance Director Nafeez Nichols responded during the finance report that the finance office is working on a simplified public-facing way to display grant dollars and other incoming funds. Nichols said the department received notice that a $182,000 payment will arrive within about 30 days after submitting requested backup documentation to the state and that staff is upgrading systems to make grant flows easier to present publicly.

Nichols also said the borough’s midyear budget review presentation is prepared and proposed to be presented virtually Aug. 28 at 6 p.m.; council must bless that schedule for staff to proceed. The finance director said managers have until Sept. 15 to submit budget requests for the upcoming budget season.

Why it matters: Residents sought more timely public access to agendas and clearer financial reporting; finance staff said they are working on a public report format and identified a near-term grant reimbursement amount that will impact the borough’s cash position.

No formal policy changes were adopted at the meeting; Nichols said improving public reporting is a staff priority and the borough is collecting feedback on presentation format.
