Tyler ISD arts director reports statewide honors, higher participation and sweepstakes successes

Luke Dean, director of visual and performing arts, presented an annual update to trustees on arts programming, student achievements and participation across elementary, middle and high schools. He highlighted two awards: Tyler ISD was recognized by the NAM Foundation as a Best Community for Music Education and earned a Texas Art Educators Association District of Distinction award for the seventh consecutive year.
Dean reported multiple student and ensemble accomplishments. He said three middle-school ensembles received sweepstakes (highest rating) at UIL concert and sight-reading contests, and that seven high-school ensembles earned sweepstakes—up from five the prior year. He noted Vera Banta advanced through three audition rounds to earn a spot in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State Mixed Choir, a placement the district had not seen since 2000 for that ensemble. Dean also described theater and Broadway recognitions for students from Tyler and Legacy high schools.
Dean provided participation numbers and said elementary students receive both music and art instruction districtwide; middle- and high-school participation varies by elective enrollment. He cautioned that some participation counts (he cited Legacy band and orchestra labeling) require roster corrections but said most programs are showing growth and that several had roughly 10% increases in early roster checks for the new school year.
Trustees were invited to attend district arts events, including the district arts festival scheduled for late April 2026, and to review more detailed rosters and contest results with Dean and arts staff.
