Students plan raised garden beds outside Door H at Lake Central High School

The Lake Central School Corporation board heard a student‑led presentation May 5 about a plan to install two raised garden beds outside Door H at Lake Central High School.
Director of facilities Mr. Ledger introduced the item and said the project will be self‑funded by the student clubs and will cost the school corporation nothing. Christina Collard, sponsor of NTEENS, and two student presidents—Anna Herr and Brandy Cooper—described the plan. “NTEENS is an organization devoted to service and leadership,” a student officer said, and the group this year has 327 members; club members are required to log 30 volunteer hours over the school year.
The clubs said the raised beds will be used for flowers, herbs and vegetables and will serve both as an aesthetic enhancement and a hands‑on learning site. Collard said the clubs expect to order the kits online and to have the beds installed “before school’s out,” and students proposed a summer volunteer schedule so plants are watered during the break. The clubs also suggested herbs and vegetables could be used by Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes or for other school‑sponsored activities.
Board members expressed encouragement and asked to be notified when installation is complete; Mr. Ledger said a photo the sponsor provided is included in the board packet.
