Commission adopts county data-privacy ordinance to comply with Utah law

The Carbon County Commission voted Sept. 5 to adopt Ordinance No. 587, which establishes a county data-privacy program intended to comply with the Utah Government Data Privacy Act. The motion carried by voice vote.
During presentation, the presiding commissioner said the state is ‘‘trying to get a good handle for all of us on the data that’s collected and that we are careful not to share what we shouldn’t.’’ No additional substantive debate was recorded; a motion and second were made and the ordinance passed.
The ordinance was described as one in a series of county actions to implement state privacy requirements for government-collected data. County staff (Lynn was named in the transcript) were present and commissioners approved the ordinance without amendment. The ordinance will establish county procedures for handling and protecting data collected by county government.
