Carbon County ratifies $200,000 rural county grant from governor’s office

The Carbon County Commission on Sept. 5 ratified the county’s acceptance of a $200,000 Rural County Grant from the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity. The grant is administered by the county and overseen by the county’s economic development board, which will review applications from local businesses.
Shani (first name only in the transcript), the county economic development staff member who presented the item, said the program typically funds projects with a 50/50 match. ‘‘We received 200,000 from this governor's office of economic opportunity. Businesses can apply for up to 50,000,’’ she said.
Shani told commissioners the program has supported business growth and helped create jobs locally; past awards have ranged from roughly $5,000 to $25,000, she said. The county’s board is expected to approve awards that best demonstrate economic impact and, where applicable, job creation. The commission ratified the contract by voice vote.
Applicants pay project costs upfront and are reimbursed for their grant-eligible share after submitting receipts or invoices to county staff, Shani said. The county will advertise the application process on its website and the economic development page.
