The Baker mayor and council adopted two proclamations recognizing health awareness months in September 2025. One proclamation designates September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, noting that ovarian cancer is frequently undetected until later stages and encouraging awareness of risk factors and early detection. The other proclamation designates September as Sickle Cell Awareness Month and highlights research progress and resources provided by national institutes and comprehensive sickle cell centers.
Both proclamations were moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote. Council members and the mayor discussed prior screening events that had been held at the public library and expressed a desire to invite an ambassador or local health representatives to future meetings for education and screening outreach. Phone and website resources referenced in the proclamation text were read into the record as informational. The proclamations will be forwarded to appropriate authorities and community partners for outreach purposes.
