Councilmember reports CAT public hearing and praises Baker’s LYNX pilot

Councilmember Desiree Collins, who serves as Baker’s representative to the Capital Area Transit (CAT) board, reported that CAT held a public hearing authorizing the levy and collection of a 10.6‑mill ad valorem tax within the city boundary to fund public transit operations. Collins said CAT leaders praised Baker’s LYNX pilot program and noted it has been effective at providing rides to students and other residents, reducing truancy and helping riders access jobs, medical appointments and groceries.
Collins described the levy language as intended to fund availability, route efficiency, operations and maintenance of CAT services within Baker. She reported CAT is seeking to expand similar pilots to other municipalities because of the local program’s apparent success. Collins’ remarks were a report to the council; no council action on the CAT levy was recorded at the meeting.
Collins also used the time to promote local community programs — the Baker Market, youth football and recreation programming — and solicited volunteers for holiday planning and Interact Club activities.
