Council votes to support Auburn School District bond and levy; public urged caution on technology spending

The Auburn City Council on Sept. 2 passed Resolution 58-58 supporting Auburn School District Proposition 1, a school building bond for learning, and Proposition 2, a safety/security and technology replacement levy, which will appear on the November ballot.
Deputy Mayor Cheryl Raikes moved the resolution and Council member Lisa Sturgis seconded. Council member Kate Baldwin, speaking as chair of a finance-focused council committee, said the bond would reduce overcrowding—she cited 41 portable classrooms at middle schools—and that the levy would fund technology replacement and security upgrades across the district. Baldwin said the measures would help keep students safe and in better learning environments.
During the council’s public comment period on the item, resident Virginia Haugen said she supports the school district generally but opposed spending “more technology than we have to have,” telling the council she worried about overinvestment in technology at the expense of core lessons. The council did not modify its resolution after public comment and voted to approve support for both measures.
