Several Auburn residents used public comment at the Aug. 18 council meeting to press the city to revisit its solid waste contract with Waste Management, citing repeated billing errors and limited avenues to resolve disputes.
Shannon Snyder, an Auburn resident, said she is charged for weekly pickups even when she does not set out a bin and that the company charges for extra collections quickly while failing to credit customers when bins are empty. “I was charged for bins when I was in Hawaii. No possible way my bins went out that day,” Snyder said. She asked the city to consider charging by weight rather than by pickup when the contract is renegotiated.
Virginia Haugen, another Auburn resident who previously worked on city council issues related to garbage, encouraged Snyder to speak with the city finance department and recalled prior local negotiations to address garbage concerns. Council members briefly confirmed with the speaker that she had contacted the city’s solid-waste staff and Waste Management before speaking to the council. The council did not take any formal action during the meeting; the comments were recorded during the audience participation portion of the agenda.
