The Auburn City Council on Aug. 18 adopted Ordinance 6984 vacating a portion of city right of way at the northwest corner of First Street NW and B Street NW to support construction of Sound Transit’s second parking garage. Council member Tracy Taylor moved approval and a deputy mayor seconded; the ordinance passed by voice vote.
Council member Tracy Taylor said, “This ordinance vacates the right of way located within a portion of the Northwest corner of First Street Northwest and B Street Northwest, subject to conditions which is not needed by the city and will support the construction of the second parking garage by Sound Transit.” The council had received a briefing on the proposal at the July 28 study session; there was no staff presentation at the Aug. 18 meeting.
The council opened a public hearing on a related right-of-way vacation (VAC25-0002) before taking final action. Auburn resident Virginia Haugen told the council she did not know the planned use and said, “I think it's, an industrial kind of a situation. Hope it works out good.” No other public speakers addressed the hearing.
The ordinance passed on a voice vote with no recorded no votes. The action vacates the specified city right of way subject to the conditions stated in the ordinance and is intended to clear title/space needed for the Sound Transit parking facility. The council did not take additional direction to staff during the meeting.
