Former ELL student urges OKCPS to prioritize English‑learner support; superintendent highlights resources and new online academy

During public comment at the Aug. 25 Oklahoma City Public Schools board meeting, Ronald Grant described his experiences as a former English language learner and urged the board to ensure ELL students receive dedicated support.
“As a former ELL student...This is why support for English language learners is not optional. It is essential,” Grant said, telling the board that ELL students have “intelligence, dreams, and potential” and need consistent support so they can move “from uncertainty to confidence.”
In the superintendent’s update, Jamie Polk highlighted the district’s first day of school and back-to-school community events that provided backpacks, supplies and services. Polk said the district launched a new First Choice online academy to offer a virtual learning option for families and reported the district started the year “98% staffed.”
Polk also emphasized district priorities including protecting instructional time, connecting families to schools and equipping staff. He framed ELL support as part of those priorities and thanked staff and community partners for their roles in early‑year events.
The board did not take formal action on the public comment. District staff said they will continue outreach and programming to support ELL students and families.
