The Tonganoxie City Council on March 17 approved Ordinance 15-26 to remove local pet-licensing requirements from the city code while bolstering vaccination requirements.
City staff presented the ordinance as a response to prior council discussion about duplicative effort and the limited revenue derived from licensing. The staff presentation said the city will "strike through essentially the parts of the code that had to do with licensing" and instead emphasize ensuring animals are vaccinated for public-safety situations such as dog bites or stray animal pickups.
The ordinance text in the agenda packet shows redline edits removing licensing references and strengthening vaccination provisions. Staff noted most vaccinations are administered by local veterinarians; the city—requirements would apply for enforcement by police or animal control in relevant incidents.
A motion to approve Ordinance 15-26 was made and seconded; the motion carried on a voice vote.
No fee schedule or revenue estimate was discussed at the meeting. Staff said removing the local licensing component would save time and nominal revenue, and that the city—would rely on vaccination documentation where needed for public-safety investigations.
