Court authorizes judge to sign county participation in Purdue-Sackler opioid settlement

County Attorney Ed Zelensky presented settlement documents tied to the national Purdue Pharma / Sackler litigation and recommended the county sign to participate. Zelensky told the court the documents were sent on Aug. 20 and Aug. 22 and that electronic signing was preferred. He described the standard settlement process in multijurisdictional litigation: counsel collectively signs participation agreements and then each party receives its share of proceeds if the larger settlement framework is approved. Commissioner discussion was brief. A motion to authorize the county judge to sign the settlement participation documents passed unanimously. Zelensky said county staff would coordinate with the litigation coordinator and provide the judge’s office the signature materials once counsel confirmed whether an electronic signature was acceptable.
