Trustees recognized Harlingen CISD students who earned statewide and national choral honors at the Aug. 12 board meeting.
Kara Hoeflinger reported that students were selected for the Texas Choral Directors Association All‑State middle school and elementary honor choirs; named performers included Jillian Garcia (qualified at eighth grade level, now a ninth grader), Genesis Guerrero (seventh grade qualifier) and Martha Santa Ana (sixth grade qualifier). Hoeflinger and trustees thanked parents and teacher Pamela Berrien for supporting the students.
Hoeflinger and other presenters also announced Harlingen South students who placed at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) South Texas audition and qualified for nationals: Bianca Rios (first place, musical theater category) and Tomas Vasquez (second place in the underclassmen men’s category). Trustees congratulated the students, praised directors and boosters, and suggested hosting send‑off or preview concerts prior to out‑of‑state travel.
Board members emphasized the district’s arts programs as a point of pride and thanked music staff and parents for their support; the recognitions were part of the meeting’s awards agenda and required no formal board action.
